In a tip pool, splitting by hours means someone who worked a full week gets more than someone who worked one shift.
The formula
Tips for a person = Tip pool × (their hours ÷ total hours of everyone)
Worked example
A week’s tip pool of 860.00 EUR is shared by five people who worked 38, 32, 25, 20 and 12 hours, 127 hours in total.
| Person | Hours | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Maria | 38 | 257.32 EUR |
| Luca | 32 | 216.69 EUR |
| Sara | 25 | 169.29 EUR |
| Tom | 20 | 135.44 EUR |
| Ivy | 12 | 81.26 EUR |
| Total | 127 | 860.00 EUR |
Hours and roles combined
Some teams give roles different weights, for example kitchen staff and floor staff. Change the basis to Points and enter hours × role points for each person: 20 hours at 1.5 points is 30.
Common questions
Who can share in a tip pool?
That depends on local employment law and your workplace rules, which differ between countries. The calculator only does the arithmetic.
